Summer 2018

 

Dear Readers,

In Sister Outsider, Audre Lorde writes, “the transformation of silence into language and action is an act of self-revelation, and that always seems fraught with danger.” To a writer, there is nothing more terrifying than the gaping silence of a blank page. The question of how best to fill that silence keeps many artists awake at night, frightened of the precision of language and the power that precision yields. The precision of written language allows for dimensionality that sometimes gets lost in the verbal manifestations of language. The burden of responsibility often silences the very voices that need to be heard most.

This summer issue highlights the creators and their work who have stared into the silence and dared to make some noise. The writers in this collection approached language and theme with vulnerability and particular attention to form. In many of these pieces, form informs content which manifests in language.  But breaking silence is dangerous work. The risks involved and the exposure required, make me proud to showcase these courageous creators in their acts of self-revelation in our inaugural issue. This is one tradition that I hope continues.
